Cariou to star in Canadian debut of Frost/Nixon

Winnipeg-born stage star Len Cariou will tackle the role of Richard Nixon in the upcoming Canadian debut of the acclaimed play Frost/Nixon.

The Canadian Stage Company and Vancouver Playhouse Theatre are teaming up to bring the Tony Award-winning production north of the border later this year, with the play to be staged from Sept. 13 to Oct. 4 in Vancouver before travelling to Toronto for a run from Oct. 13 to Nov. 8.

Theatre director and actor David Storch will portray British television presenter David Frost, while Cariou is slated to play the late U.S. president.

Though his recent roles have included appearances on television and film, the 68-year-old Cariou's stage career has spanned classical roles at the Stratford Festival to his Tony Award-winning turn in the debut production of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street on Broadway.

Other stage credits include Applause and A Little Night Music, as well as leadership posts at the Guthrie Theatre and the Manitoba Theatre Centre.

Frost/Nixon, hit screenwriter Peter Morgan's playwrighting debut, is a behind-the-scenes dramatization of British talk show host David Frost's famed interviews with the disgraced Nixon.

The British playboy interviewer landed, in 1977, an exclusive interview with Nixon after he had been forced out of the White House by the Watergate scandal. In a surprising move, Frost was able to elicit an apology from the former president for the scandal.

The play earned raves after its premiere in London's West End in 2006 and went on to win over New York critics during a Broadway run in 2007. A movie version starring Michael Sheen and Frank Langella — who starred in both the London and New York editions — was filmed in 2007 and is slated for release in December 2008 or January 2009.
