Vancouver Playhouse picks hometown administrator as new artistic chief
The Vancouver Playhouse has lured a British Columbia-born arts executive back home to take its top post.
Max Reimer — currently managing artistic director of Theatre Aquarius in Hamilton, Ont.— will succeed the troupe's outgoing artistic director, Glynis Leyshon, the West Coast theatre company announced on Tuesday.
Born in Chilliwack and raised in Kitimat and Vancouver, Reimer, 53, will take over for Leyshon at the close of the 2007-2008 season.
A former actor who has produced and directed a host of stage productions, Reimer has stints at the Charlottetown Festival and the Stratford Festival of Canada under his belt.
During his 12-year tenure at Theatre Aquarius, he helped the company resolve several of its financial woes and increase its subscriber base, ticket sales and sponsorships.
The Vancouver Playhouse announced in August it was merging the position of general manager and artistic director into a single role as part of its multi-year redevelopment plan.
At the time of the announcement, the troupe also revealed that general manager Jon Stettner had stepped down and that Leyshon planned to end her 10-year run as artistic director following the 2007-2008 season.
