Red Wings raise Stanley Cup banner to rafters

The Detroit Red Wings raised their 11th Stanley Cup banner to the rafters in a stirring pre-game ceremony at Joe Louis Arena on Thursday night.

Gordie Howe, Ted Lindsay, Alex Delvecchio and other Red Wings legends brought the banner onto the ice and handed it over to current members, who prevailed in six games over the Pittsburgh Penguins in the Stanley Cup final.

Ironically, forward Marian Hossa and backup goaltender Ty Conklin, now with Detroit, played for Pittsburgh in the spring.

The Stanley Cup itself was displayed at centre ice atop a puck-shaped pedestal, surrounded by several other trophies won by the Red Wings last season.

Unfortunately for the sellout crowd of 20,066, the Red Wings were stunned 3-2 by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the season opener for both teams.

Detroit has won the Stanley Cup four times since 1997.
