The San Jose Sharks announced on Sunday that sophomore forward Torrey Mitchell will be lost for up to eight weeks after breaking his lower leg during training camp.
Mitchell fractured the tibula and fibia in his left leg and was scheduled to undergo surgery late Sunday night.
Mitchell played all 82 games for San Jose in his rookie year, providing energy and defensive skills. He scored 10 goals and 10 assists, with two short-handed markers.
He added a goal and two assists in 13 games as San Jose fell to Dallas in the second round of the Western Conference playoffs.
The Greenfield, Park, Que., native was selected in the fourth round of the 2004 draft by the Sharks. He played prep school hockey in Connecticut and attended the University of Vermont.
Kurtis Foster of the Minnesota Wild suffered a broken leg in March after Mitchell collided with him on an icing play.
