The San Jose Sharks on Wednesday announced a four-year contract extension for young defenceman Marc-Edouard Vlasic.
The extension will kick in after this season, during which Vlasic will earn $735,000 US as his entry-level contract lapses. No financial details for the extension were released by the club.
"Marc-Edouard is one of the top young defenceman in the game and we are excited to have him in to fold for the next several years," San Jose general manager Doug Wilson said in a statement. "He has a tremendous future with this franchise and we look forward to watching his continued development."
The Montreal native has played two full seasons despite being only 21 years old. He has scored five goals and added 35 assists with a plus-1 rating in 163 games, missing just one game in his career.
Vlasic, who played major junior hockey with the Quebec Remparts, was selected in the second round of the 2005 NHL draft by San Jose.
