Mark Kotsay says being in a pennant race as the newest member of the Boston Red Sox will be "cool."
The Atlanta Braves dealt the outfielder for minor league outfielder Luis Sumoza on Wednesday.
Kotsay, 32, was hoping to arrive at Yankee Stadium in time for Wednesday's 7:05 p.m. ET matchup against New York.
He is expected to play left field and centre-field for the Red Sox as a fill-in for the injured J.D. Drew, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday with a lower back strain.
Kotsay had a .289 batting average in 88 games this season for the Braves to go with six home runs and 37 runs batted in.
The six-foot, 205-pound Kotsay has averaged .282 in his 10-plus major league seasons with the Florida Marlins, San Diego Padres, Oakland Athletics and Braves.
Sumoza, 20, hit .301 in 51 games for the Class-A Lowell Spinners of the New York-Penn League this season.
Boston entered play Wednesday with a 76-55 record and 2 ½ game lead over Minnesota in the American League wild-card race.
