The New York Rangers announced on Tuesday a new contract for veteran defenceman Paul Mara.
Mara, who was an unrestricted free agent, scored one goal and 16 assists and a plus-1 rating in 61 regular season games with New York. He was acquired before the 2007 trade deadline in a deal with the Boston Bruins.
The defender received a one-year deal for $1.95 million US. He earned $3 million US last season but was willing to take a cut after spending much of his career on the move.
Mara has notched 58 goals and 160 assists for in 563 career games, along with 546 penalty minutes. He has also played for Tampa Bay and Phoenix.
The 28-year-old was selected seventh overall by Tampa Bay in the 1997 draft. The Ridgewood, N.J., native has represented the United States four times in junior and senior world hockey championship competitions.
Mara will rejoin a Rangers blue-line corps that will have a different look. Longtime Ottawa Senator Wade Redden signed as a free agent, as did Dmitri Kalinin from the Buffalo Sabres. New York traded defenceman Fedor Tyutin and Christian Backman.
The Rangers also announced on Tuesday that former player agent and Phoenix general manager Mike Barnett has joined the organization as a senior adviser and director of U.S. scouting.
