Daniel Cabrera avoids arbitration with Orioles

Baltimore Orioles pitcher Daniel Cabrera agreed Thursday to a one-year contract worth $2.875 million US.

Cabrera, 26, was seeking $3.3 million US in salary arbitration; the Orioles were offering $2.6 million US.

Cabrera made $1.95 million US last season, when he led the American League in losses (18), earned runs (126) and walks (108).

The right-hander posted a 9-18 record with a 5.55 earned-run average over 34 starts, but he established career highs with 166 strikeouts and 204 1/3 innings pitched.

Cabrera is 40-49 lifetime with a 4.99 ERA, four complete games and one save in 117 appearances since breaking into the majors with Baltimore on May 13, 2004.
