Vince Carter will be out of the lineup indefinitely after spraining his right ankle, the New Jersey Nets announced on Monday.
Carter, 30, was injured on Saturday when he landed on Boston's Paul Pierce following a dunk. Nets team president Rod Thorn said Carter had undergone an MRI on Monday and there was no timetable for the player's return.
New Jersey (5-2) play New Orleans on Monday night.
Carter averaged 17.0 points, 5.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists in the team's first six games.
He signed a four-year, $65 US million extension in the off-season after setting a franchise record for points while playing in all 82 games for New Jersey last season.
Acquired from Toronto in a 2005 trade, Carter averaged 25.2 points, 6.0 rebounds and 4.2 assists last season. Carter spent more than six seasons with the Raptors, winning the NBA rookie of the year award in 1999.
