The Ottawa Senators just keep on rolling.
Mike Fisher notched two power play goals and Joe Corvo added three assists to push the Senators past the Boston Bruins 3-2 at Scotiabank Place in Ottawa on Saturday night.
Fisher's wrist shot off a rebound with the man advantage at 13:49 of the third period eluded Bruins goaltender Tim Thomas and gave the Senators their first lead since early in the second period.
"We've got smart players that can move the puck around and shoot, so it was just a matter of time I guess," Fisher said. "We wanted make sure we were getting pucks to the net and using our speed. They've got some big D but we feel we're a little bit quicker so if we could chip it in and get in behind them we could do a pretty good job."
All three Senators goals were on the power play, which was the only way they could beat Thomas on Saturday. Thomas was sensational in a losing effort, making 42 saves for the Bruins and nearly stealing the game from a red-hot Senators team.
"Timmy is the reason we stayed in the game, there's no doubt about that," said Bruins head coach Claude Julien. "He stood tall for us and gave us chance to get at least a point. Unfortunately penalties ended up costing us and that was disappointing."
Martin Gerber made 17 saves to earn the win for Ottawa (11-1-0), which has won six straight games. The Senators have scored twice as many goals as their opponents during that streak, by a margin of 24-12.
Chuck Kobasew provided all the offence for Boston (7-5-0), scoring two goals in a four-minute span in the second period.
Ottawa comes back, hangs on
Fisher put Ottawa on the board just over four minutes into the first period.
After the Bruins failed to clear the puck from their own zone on the power play, the Senators peppered Thomas with point shots. Fisher was left alone in front and shovelled home a lose puck past Thomas for his fourth goal of the season to stake the Senators to an early 1-0 lead.
Boston levelled the score on a jam play early in the second period. After defenceman Zedeno Chara skated deep into the right corner and cycled the puck behind the net, Kobasew took the puck and used a wraparound attempt that just squeezed by Gerber to draw the Bruins even at 1-1.
Dany Heatley scored Ottawa's third power play marker of the game at the 10:14 mark of the second period. While at the left boards in the Bruins zone, Redden spotted Heatley at the right circle and whipped a cross-ice pass to the left winger. Heatley's rocket of a one-timer gave him his eighth goal of the season and tied the score 2-2.
"That was a great shot. The puck came around the wall and I had a little time. He had his stick up in the air ready so I just fired it to him and he made a great shot to beat [Thomas]," Redden said.
The two teams will meet again at TD Banknorth Garden in Boston on Sunday.
