Sabres lock up Jochen Hecht
The Buffalo Sabres have signed forward Jochen Hecht to a four-year, $14.1-million US extension, the team confirmed Tuesday.
Hecht, who is making $2.3 million this season in the final year of his contract, will earn $3.8 million in the first two years of his extension, followed by $3.5 million and $3 million in the final two.
The 30-year-old German has two goals and two assists in five games this season — his fifth with the Sabres — and is serving as team captain for October after the off-season departures of former co-captains Daniel Brière and Chris Drury.
In 478 career NHL contests with Buffalo, St. Louis and Edmonton, Hecht has 112 goals and 298 points, including a career-high 56 points in 76 games last season.
Hecht's hard-nosed style endears him to fans, but also may have contributed to the injuries he's endured throughout his career. He has played in all 82 games only once, averaging just 67 games per season.
The Sabres acquired Hecht from the Oilers in June 2002 in exchange for two second-round picks. He was originally selected by the Blues in the second round of the 1995 draft.
