Paul Kelly, a Boston-based former U.S. assistant district attorney, may be on the verge of taking over the National Hockey League Players' Association.
Citing an inside source, Canadian Press reports the 30 player reps will hold a conference call on Monday night, during which the search committee will recommend Kelly as the union's executive director.
A secret ballot vote among the player reps would then take about seven to 10 days.
Kelly, who's currently a lawyer in Boston, would replace Ted Saskin, fired by the union last May after it was alleged he ordered the opening and reading of the email accounts of members trying to put together an uprising against him.
The search committee includes Eric Lindros, Chris Chelios, Mike Cammalleri, Shawn Horcoff and Robyn Regehr.
Kelly, with more than 20 years trial experience, is best known in the hockey world for building the American fraud and embezzlement case against former NHLPA boss Alan Eagleson.
He also represented former player Marty McSorley when the latter was charged in 2000 for an attack on former Vancouver Canucks' forward Donald Brashear.
