No Cinderella ending for Boerigter
Marc Boerigter's return to Calgary has ended in disappointment: The Stampeders released the wide receiver on Sunday.
Boerigter, 29, had caught just 16 passes in seven games for 246 yards and a touchdown with Calgary this season, his first in the CFL since 2001. He was scratched in the team's last game, a 45-45 tie against British Columbia.
"It was what we thought was a match made in heaven to have Marc back," Stampeders coach Tom Higgins said. "For whatever reason, we didn't write that Cinderella story at the end."
Boerigter was returning to a site of former glory but wasn't the same offensive force after tearing an anterior cruciate ligament in a knee in 2004 while playing with the Kansas City Chiefs in the NFL.
The Iowa native made a splash in two seasons with Calgary in 2000-01, catching a total of 111 passes and scoring 19 touchdowns.
He hauled in four passes for 114 yards and a touchdown when Calgary upset Winnipeg to win the 2001 Grey Cup. He was named a CFL West all-star that season.
Boerigter was a red zone threat for Kansas City in his first NFL season, with eight of his 20 catches going for touchdowns in 2002. His numbers tailed off with the Chiefs, and after his injury, he failed to latch on with Green Bay and Indianapolis before returning to Canada.
