Halifax Virgin Festival free after Tragically Hip cancel

The Tragically Hip, who were set to headline the first Virgin Festival in Halifax on Saturday, have pulled out because of a family emergency.

The good news for prospective concertgoers is that organizers have said the show will go on for free.

Virgin Festival plans to refund all current paying ticket holders.

"Our thoughts are with The Tragically Hip right now," Andrew Bridge, director of Virgin Festivals, said in a statement Friday.

"The Virgin Festival will still go ahead as planned at Citadel Hill on July 4 — but now it will be free to anyone and everyone."

The lineup still includes California punk band The Offspring, indie band Metric, Dinosaur Jr., Handsome Furs, Hey Rosetta!, Plants and Animals, Arkells, In Flight Safety and Dog Day.

The one-day festival is Halifax's first Virgin Festival.

In lieu of an entry fee, concertgoers are encouraged to bring a donation for the Parker Street Food Bank.
