Vancouver Symphony appoints Australian violinist as concertmaster
Dale Barltrop, an Australian-born violinist who trained in the U.S., has been named as concertmaster of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra.
He will take up the post, which involves leading the VSO string section and working with music director Bramwell Tovey, in September.
Barltrop, who won Grand Prize at the Fischoff National Chamber Music competition in 2005 and the Jules C. Reiner violin prize at Tanglewood in 2003, will be a frequent soloist with the orchestra.
His solo repertoire includes works by Bach, Locatelli, Piazzolla, Schubert and Vivaldi.
He has been principal second violin in the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra since 2003 and principal second violin of the Mainly Mozart Festival Orchestra in San Diego since 2005.
Originally from Brisbane, Barltrop studied at the University of Maryland and the Cleveland Institute of Music and has been associate concertmaster at the Akron Symphony Orchestra in Ohio.
