Charlottetown shouldn't pay $25,000 for concert: councillor
A Charlottetown city councillor said the city shouldn't have to help pay for next month's Alanis Morissette concert in P.E.I, because it's outside city limits.
The concert is scheduled to take place at the outdoor stage in the nearby community of Alexandra on Sept. 13.
Promoter David Christian asked the city for $25,000 because it is expected the concert will help boost tourism to the city's hotels and restaurants.
But Coun. Rob Lantz said it's not the city's responsibility to help pay for the concert.
"If we were to fund this event it would set a precedent that would just open the floodgates to all kinds of other requests for funding outside the city," he said.
Lantz said the concert will take place, whether Charlottetown gives the promoter the money or not.
No decision was reached by a subcommittee of city council, which debated the issue last week.
The full city council will make the final decision during the next meeting, at the beginning of September. CBC has been unable to contact Christian.
