Britain's NME plans U.S. music awards gala

British music magazine NME plans a new U.S. version of its influential music awards to be held in Los Angeles on April 23.

Fans in Canada and the U.S. are being invited to vote for their favourite artists online to determine awards winners.

A website allowing music lovers to nominate bands in one of 10 categories went live on Monday.

Among the categories are best alternative, independent and international band and best solo artist.

More categories, including best album, best track and best live performance, will be open for voting March 10.

A short list will be determined in the next few weeks, NME says on the website.

The inaugural U.S. NME Awards are a joint venture between NME and Goldenvoice, a concert promoter that is organizing a tour being headlined by Kate Nash in advance of the ceremony.

The Arctic Monkeys dominated the NME Awards in Britain, announced last week.
